More and more people choose to have a pet other than a dog or cat. And each species needs specific care. In this article, we will inform you about different treatment options for rabbits with fleas.

How to detect fleas on rabbits

If your pet is itchy a lot, this could be due to several reasons, although the most frequent ones are fleas.

Yes, these parasites known to dog and cat owners also affect other mammals, including the rabbit.

The first thing you should do in this case is to inspect the animal’s skin between the fur. If you notice brown patches that cling tightly to the fur, it could be flea droppings.

To confirm the ‘picture’, just look at those tiny jumping parasites, which lodge mainly behind the ears and in the nose.

Fleas are very irritating to pets as they bite them to feed on blood.

Therefore, as soon as you detect that your rabbit is harboring these parasites, you should act immediately.

Some treatments are:

  1. flea comb

In case there are few fleas, it is very easy to remove them with a special comb, which can be found in pet stores or veterinarians.

To make the procedure easier, we  recommend that you first comb the rabbit and dip the comb in warm water.

Then pass it behind the hair direction (as if you were going to ruffle it). With each pass, wash the comb with soap and water or alcohol.

  1. Flea Remedies

The veterinarian can recommend different treatments for rabbits with fleas; especially in more severe cases, that is, when it is heavily infested with parasites.

There are different brands and products, which are applied to the back of the animal’s neck, exactly where it cannot lick (as with dogs or cats).

In case you have more than one rabbit, it is necessary that, for a day or two after applying the medicine, you separate them.

This way it will be possible to prevent them from licking each other. Don’t forget that it’s a poison that can intoxicate you, or that licking, at the very least, can reduce the medicine’s effectiveness.

  1. Powders or aerosols

You should be very careful with these types of medications, as  many of them, although prescribed by your veterinarian, can cause allergies or other skin reactions.

Even some doctors test the product to make sure it’s right.

  1. Domestic cleaning

More than a treatment for rabbits with fleas, it is a way to prevent the problem. If you have other pets, do your best to eliminate any parasites you might have.

It is also  essential to do a good cleaning of carpets, beds, pillows and all the places where fleas can ‘hide’.

There are sprinklers for corners and fabrics that kill fleas in a short amount of time: they prevent them from entering the house.

You must be careful that the rabbit – or any other animal – does not lick the ground, as it can be deadly for him. On these days, we advise you to take a walk or not allow the animal to enter the environment in question.

For nothing in the world you should apply flea remedies for cats or dogs.  Since they don’t have the same composition and can be toxic, and even deadly, to your rabbit.

It is also not advisable to put on flea collars, as in addition to being uncomfortable and ineffective, they have a substance that is harmful to the animal’s health.

Finally, we advise you to treat rabbits with fleas weekly, as a prevention, using the flea comb.

This way you will not allow parasites to proliferate on your pet.
