O Braco de Ariège comes from France and even in this country it is still a little known breed. . It has always been a hunting dog and is not well known as a pet. This breed was created in the 19th century, through crosses between the french arm and other arms from southern areas that had white or orange coats.

This breed, perhaps because of the work it was dedicated to and because it was not considered suitable as a companion animal, did not have much popularity and, by the 1980s, it was nearly extinct. However, some breeders decided to preserve them and by the 1990s their population was again growing.

Today the Arm of Ariege continues to exist, but still not very famous, except in the hunting world and even among many hunters, whether from France or other countries, it is not well known.

Characteristics

It is a robust, medium-sized dog with a powerful appearance. It’s light, yet strong and resistant, and combines it with elegance that brings in the harmony of its proportions. Although their limbs are slender, they look straight and muscular, strong and robust, and with long thighs.

Males can measure between 60 to 67 centimeters in height, while females are between 56 and 65 centimeters. Its weight varies between 25 and 30 kilos and its life expectancy is 12 to 14 years.

Its tail is thick at the base and is adjusted to the outside, although, as a rule, it is usually clipped to avoid discomfort while hunting. In relation to its head, it is long and with a straight muzzle, which creates an almost 90-degree angle; and with thin, twisted, long ears that fall almost to the nose.

Furthermore, its short fur is tight, strong and abundant, and it has a softer inner layer. . The colors accepted are mainly the  white and caramel, with orange or brown spots .

Although it is always used as Hunter and tracker, Ariège’s arm is a very versatile and adaptable dog, so it could easily be used for other tasks. .
