Cats Leaving The House: Keeping An Eye On Deworming

Cats leaving the house: Keeping an eye on deworming

Cats are independent and inquisitive animals. Really, they really like to get out of the house, and they always take advantage of it when they have a chance to escape into the street. This, in addition to being dangerous for the animal, especially if you live in a city with heavy traffic, also brings home the problem of parasites.

As if that wasn’t enough, in addition to human lice, cats can also take home different parasites. It is, therefore, very important that deworming or deworming be done frequently.

Why deworm?

Deworming serves to eliminate different types of parasites from the digestive system, or from the skin of an animal, or even to prevent them from entering the animal’s body.

A parasite is a living organism that feeds on another living being, which will harm it in some way.

Deworming is important if they leave home, live with their family, or share a home with humans or other animals. In addition to being important for the cat’s health, it prevents them from parasitizing the rest of the family and other animals.

Although cats may not leave the house, you should deworm them regularly, because larval parasites may have remained on the owners’ clothes or the soles of their shoes and then transmitted by contact to the animal.

Types of deworming:

external parasites

External deworming is performed to remove parasites from the skin of animals, such as fleas, ticks and mites, which cause scabies. External deworming is done using collars, pipettes or insecticide sprays, although there are some home remedies that effectively eliminate fleas and ticks.

Although there are specific remedies for the removal of each parasite, separately, if a preventive deworming is done, ie; when there is no infestation, it is done to avoid, you can use products that serve in general for all parasites.

If deworming is performed using pipettes, the product should be placed in the center of the cat’s nape, on the back, so that it cannot lick or have any contact with the product.

External deworming must be carried out at least once a month, throughout the year, especially if cats that have contact with the outside and/or live with other animals that have contact with the outside.

internal parasites

Control of internal parasites is carried out to completely eliminate worms such as tapeworm, roundworms and toxoplasma.

These living beings can also infect humans, so it is appropriate that the internal parasites are eliminated. These parasites are mainly transmitted through other animals, so if the cat has access to an area of the garden, it is dangerous for it to eat raw viscera or to hunt any bird or rodent.

This parasitism can cause vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, bleeding in the mouth, blood and mucus in the stool, weight loss, fatigue and some irritability.

If these symptoms are observed in the animal, it is necessary to consult your veterinarian immediately.

Internal deworming is performed using pills, creams, syrups or pipettes, always under the supervision of a veterinarian, because the dose always depends on the cat’s weight and age.

The frequency of internal deworming depends on the age of the cat and the environment in which they live, but usually once every three months is sufficient.

How do you prevent infestations?

The best way to prevent an infestation is to thoroughly clean the cat when it returns home, and check its coat, in addition to regular preventive deworming.

Another way to provide a parasitic disinfestation is to prevent the cat from leaving the house, for this you can neuter it or make sure it has fun at home, playing with it and satisfying its curiosity, so it doesn’t want to go out and see what’s out there.

Cats are curious and independent, so they tend to go out and explore, especially at night, and wherever they meet.

Therefore, it is better to control your cat’s outings by taking him for a walk in a controlled environment.
