Bourbonnais Arm

Bourbonnais Arm

The Bourbonnais arm is another kind of arm; which we want to talk more deeply about.  It has special characteristics and a calm behavior. Stay with us to meet him!

Meet the Braco de Bourbonnais

Also known as the Arm of Burbônia, this dog of French origin was, like other arms, used as a working dog. Let’s see more of its history.

Origin and history of the Bourbonnais arm

It is believed, as in the case of other arms, that this race descended from the French pointer and emerged in the 16th century; according to the summary of Aldovrandri’s Natural History which is in the National Library of France. Since then, he has lived in the Pyrenees of Ariége.

Specifically, the Bourbonnais arm comes from crosses made by local dogs with the French arm; until the races were differentiated and hybrid processes were prohibited.

As with other arms; this one also almost died out after the two world wars.

However, in the 70s, some breeders, in addition to wanting to preserve the breed; they wanted to include specimens that were not white and mix them with them.

In addition, some hunters and breeders managed to keep this race from becoming extinct; making crosses only with the few specimens of the Bourbonnais arm that are left in the world.

Even though, to date, only about 100 puppies are born a year; this seems to be enough to preserve the continuity of this beautiful animal.

Bourbonnais arm characteristics

This animal is medium to large in size and is very similar to other arms: powerful and vigorous; but light and very resistant at the same time.

Despite her strong appearance, she is very elegant in her movements, accentuated by the beauty of her hair and the harmony of her body proportions.

It is noteworthy that something that sets it apart from other arms is the size of its legs, which are shorter. However, they are straight and robust.

Its head is long, with a straight snout and a chocolate-colored nose, with very open nostrils. Her long, thin ears fall down on either side of her face. Until recently, its tail was clipped (this is currently prohibited), but today you can enjoy it, wide at the base and a little long.

Its coat is short and thick and at the same time soft and shiny. Its most common colors are white with grooved spots or striped beige in these tones. Interestingly, the roan color is admitted in the breed, a mixture of all those mentioned above.

Temperament and behavior of the Bourbonnais arm

Although it was mainly used as a tracker, this animal can have many functions and is adaptable. So you’ll be able to carry out other tasks without any problem. It wasn’t used much as a companion animal, but its calm character makes it suitable for that. He is balanced, kind, affectionate, docile and very good with children and other pets.

In short; this is a very active dog, which does not understand itself, will not become destructive and will not bark much. He is also very attached to his family, likes affection and games. Without a doubt, an ideal pet.

health and care

This, like other arms, does not need much special care, as there are no major health problems associated with the breed. However, to avoid inconveniences, exercise is something that should be part of your routine.

In fact, lack of sufficient physical exercise can result in stress, anxiety and other problems that can alter the animal’s behavior and coexistence.

Likewise, it’s important to examine your ears, because because of their shape, it’s very easy for bacteria and ticks to become lodged in them. On your fur, weekly brushing to eliminate dead remains will suffice.
