Top Dog Sports

When you get a dog, you don’t just get a pet, you get a friend and a responsibility. Live in an apartment or a big house; your pet, your friend, and your newly acquired responsibility will need to exercise. But you can see this on the bright side: if you are a sportsman, you will already have someone to accompany you, unless your favorite sport is chess.

And even if you’re not a sportsman, you have to fulfill your responsibility. But don’t despair either, you don’t have to go for a run if you don’t like it. There are different types of sports that your dog can practice. In fact, there are sports that are exclusive to dogs. As always, we will tell you about it.

Sports for fit dogs

  1. Agility. It is a sport just for dogs that consists in making the dog run through a track full of obstacles that the animal will have to go around. This trend was born around 1978 to be able to entertain the attendants of canine beauty contests. But little by little it became a sport for dogs on an international level and allowed any type of breed and size of dog to participate.

This sport for dogs is intended to improve the animal’s motor system, as well as its agility and reflexes.

  1. Flyball. For this game two teams of 4 dogs are required. It’s a bit like a substitution race. A box containing a tennis ball or similar is placed about fifteen meters from the starting line. When the touch is given, the first dog of each team comes out and must run to the box, remove the ball and return to its place.

After that, the other dog will come out. The first dog to complete all substitutions will indicate the winning team. Although it is a game allowed for all races and sizes, if you want to win, it is better to do it with fast dogs.

  1. Canicross. This is one of the sports for dogs that has reached a professional level. It is possible to participate in championships throughout Europe. There are two categories: men and women. This is why dog ​​owners must participate along with them. It consists of running with a dog tied to the waist, via a breastplate and a strap.

This sport must be done on arid terrain, grass or on snow. It is not recommended to do it on asphalt as it could harm the animal’s foot pads.

  1. Dog Frisbee. This must be one of the most popular sports for dogs. It consists of throwing a disc so that the dog can catch it after doing some stunts. Obviously, it is one of the sports for dogs in which animals must be trained and trained. Not all dogs know how to do stunts from birth.

From this sport there are very important and interesting competitions to observe throughout the United States, being transformed into the main sport for dogs.

It’s possible that where you live there isn’t an obstacle course to practice agility or possibly no dog competitions or other furry sports. However, you can practice other sports with your dog. These can be:

  • Run. The animal can follow its pace.
  • Skate. If the animal is well trained not to get between your skates, your good friend will be able to accompany you on your crossing.
  • Walk. For the less adventurous or more sedentary, taking long walks will benefit your dog and you too.
  • Catch the ball. This will always be part of standard sports. For this sport it is not necessary to have another dog or to sign up for championships.

However, before deciding on any of these sports, whether traditional or dog-only sports, consult your veterinarian about your pet’s health status. Get tested to see how your heart, bones, spine and other things your veterinarian might recommend is doing.

Even if you’ve chosen a sport and your veterinarian says your pet won’t be able to do it, ask if there’s one that’s suitable for it. Remember that not all races are equal and that each one of them will be able to practice one or another sport.
