Why Are There Rations Without Cereals?

Gluten intolerance is one of the reasons for the existence of this type of feed, although, at the moment, the only breeds that show intolerance are the setters.
Why are there rations without cereals?

Gluten intolerance is becoming more common in recent years. While it’s true that there are many people who actually have it, it’s also true that some have become obsessed with it and even wanted to transfer this disease to their pets. Cereal-free rations exist, an alternative for  dogs that cannot eat gluten, but are they suitable for all dogs?

Why non-grain rations

The reasoning that led this type of feed to start being manufactured and marketed was logical. “If dogs come from wolves and don’t eat cereal, why should dogs eat them?” This may sound reasonable, but there are other factors involved.

It is well known that, although the dog descended from the wolf, it evolved, especially in its era of domestication and coexistence with humans. This caused  your body to undergo changes as well, such as in the digestion process.

While it’s true that some dogs have gluten intolerance, another reason they eat grain-free, it’s also true that not everyone should avoid grain. Studies have shown that the aforementioned evolution  allows dogs to assimilate complex carbohydrates that cereals contain in their bodies.

In fact, since they started to live with humans, they also started to feed on cereals through ration and the BARF diet.

No cereals, yes or no?

Carbohydrates are believed to lead to obesity in dogs  , so many choose non-grain foods to control their pets’ weight.

However, just because a ration is free of grain does not mean that it does not contain carbohydrates, as they are an important part when it comes to preparing the ration and shaping it. It’s like you’re trying to bake a cake without flour. That’s not possible, right?

And this is even worse, because  the carbohydrates present in cereals are called complex, that is, they are natural and are easily assimilated and digested. A dog with a balanced diet and regular physical activity can maintain his weight and good health without any problem.

Healthy carbohydrates could come from potatoes, sweet potatoes or pulses such as chickpeas or lentils. If your dog has no problems with gluten, these foods can be beneficial for him.

Obviously,  if your dog has a problem with gluten, it is clear that non-grain food is recommended  if you do not want to introduce him to the BARF diet. However, the best thing to do would be to talk to your veterinarian for advice on what is most convenient for your pet.

Are there dogs with allergies?

At present, it is known that  gluten intolerance is unique to setters as it is still the only known breed in which a gluten intolerance has been diagnosed. Of other allergies , it is  estimated that only 10% are of the food type and, among these, cereals are an almost imperceptible minority.

So if your dog hasn’t been diagnosed with a gluten problem, there’s no reason why you should have to feed him non-grain rations that would otherwise take you away from your goal of providing a healthy, balanced diet for your dog.  pet.

Even if you choose non-grain rations, we recommend that you buy the best quality, those that, although more expensive, have gone through exhaustive controls. Remember that the BARF diet is always an excellent alternative to a healthy diet.
