Also called the Central Asian Mastiff, this is one of the breeds that doesn’t fit in very well in a small apartment, but you’ll want to have one of them watch over the entrance to your cottage.
Central Asian Shepherd: training and breed characteristics

If there is one breed of dog capable of commanding respect, it is the Central Asian Shepherd. Not much is known about its origins, but data on this breed have been available in rocky areas of Central and South Asia for centuries.

This type of dog is used by shepherds on this continent to protect and guide livestock. And it is a favorite because of its great intelligence, cunning and strength. It’s one of those dogs that it’s best to have a good relationship with…

Central Asian Shepherd Training

Having contact with this dog since a puppy will be crucial for the coexistence to be 100% satisfactory. When it comes to animals of this size and strength, it is necessary to be very aware of the importance of good training to avoid future problems.

Central Asia Shepherd

The most important thing is that the animal feels who is the leader of the family at all times : you must be above it and educate it with rewards, never with punishments. Using physical strength with dogs of that weight and behavior is not a good idea and can be counterproductive, as is the case with the European mastiff.

His magnificent intelligence makes him learn very easily, and soon you will be inseparable friends. But, as with any other animal, patience is needed, especially if the animal is young and restless. As long as you remain the pack leader, you will have no behavioral problems with him.

Another point that strengthens the relationship with this type of dog is the performance of outdoor activities, such as hiking, for example.

If the central-asian pastor is feeling well physically, if he can unwind and if he is well fed, he will need nothing more than to concentrate on his long hours of sleep.

The rewards with small dog treats will make him obey much faster than just repeating commands. His ravenous appetite will make him much more focused if, in the end, he receives such an award.

It is also recommended that he interact with other dogs from an early age. If this dog lives isolated from contact with other dogs, as is often the case on farms where they are used as guard dogs, he is more likely to become aggressive towards other dogs, with the consequences that a fight with a dog like this can have.

Breed Characteristics

It’s a huge dog, no doubt. The male Central Asian Shepherd can measure up to 80 centimeters at the withers, while the female is five centimeters shorter. Specimens of up to three feet have been found, but this is unusual.

The weight also depends a lot on each individual, but the normal thing is that they weigh around 60 to 90 kg, making them a physical prodigy, with great musculature.

Despite its weight and size, the Central Asian Shepherd is an extremely agile and resilient dog. It can take long hours of walking without tiring and has a higher top speed than most dogs its size.

Its coat is thick, with a density that makes it very resistant to the cold. The Central Asian Mastiff is divided into two types: the short-haired, whose fur is between three and five centimeters, and the long-haired one, whose fur measures two to eight centimeters. Anyway, the length of the fur does not reach the same length as other mastiffs.

The use of this animal to protect the cattle made it go through very adverse weather conditions throughout the breed’s history. For this reason, it is a dog that has a coat that protects it very well from the cold and that hardly needs any care, except daily brushing at the time of coat change, if you don’t want the house to be full of fur.

On the other hand, as it is classified as a potentially dangerous breed, typical licenses are required to have this type of animal. It’s not easy to get a pure dog these days, but if you find a puppy, it will be a dog you’ll have fun with and feel very protected with.
