What is a tick?

A tick is a small insect with many legs that hook into the skin of animals (or humans) and feed on their blood.

They are usually located behind the ears, around the anus or in the neck, where the animal will not be able to remove it.

Ticks can also transmit diseases such as Lyme disease, which can cause inflammation in the dog’s joints, skin changes, fever, malaise and muscle pain.

Every time your dog returns from a walk outside the house, you should make sure there are no ticks attached to his skin. However, if your pet is scratching the areas mentioned above, you should carefully check for ticks.

It is ideal to remove ticks when they are small, as they can still be easily removed with home remedies. If they’re already big, it’s best to remove them with tweezers, using gloves to prevent them from sticking to your skin, and iodine to disinfect the dog’s wound.

Home remedies can also be used to prevent the occurrence of ticks, although it is more effective to put on a repellent collar and take it regularly to the vet so vaccines can be administered.

To remove ticks with chamomile you will need water, cotton and chamomile flowers, you can easily find chamomile at any tea shop or herb store.

You can also use chamomile tea sachets, but it’s best that the product be as natural as possible. Once the ingredients are gathered, you should then make a tea with the chamomile.

For this, put water to boil and when it boils (never before), add the flowers, or the sachet, of chamomile.

Let it rest for 15 minutes, so that the water takes on all the properties of chamomile. When the infusion is warmer, dip a cotton ball into the liquid, squeeze it to remove excess infusion, and apply it to your pet’s skin, all over the body, especially around the ears, neck, head and feet, which are the preferred areas of ticks.

The chamomile scent will scare away the ticks, they will run away with the smell of the herb which is unpleasant for them.

This homemade trick can be done every 15 days and must be repeated until the end of the infestation, but you can keep doing it to avoid future infestations. You can also apply this remedy as a last wash after bathing your pet.

After disinfecting your pet you must also disinfect the house, to prevent reinfestation, thus removing ticks that may still be there.

To do this, put in your washing machine everything that can be washed, then spray the house with a preparation of lemon and water (one liter of boiling water and two slices of lemon. Bring to the boil for a minute and then, wait for an hour to cool, taking care that the water does not evaporate. When it cools, put it in a spray, or a commercial pesticide).

If ticks leave sores on your pet’s skin, you can apply calendula creams, gels or creams with aloe vera (which moisturizes the skin) and lavender oil (which protects the wounds from infection).
