Know The Symptoms Of Epilepsy In Dogs

Know the symptoms of epilepsy in dogs

Epilepsy in  dogs is a physical disorder that affects the brain and can cause a seizure of uncoordinated movements. It is not a lethal disease, but knowing how to act in the face of an epileptic seizure can save your pet’s life.

The brain is a multitasking organ. It is responsible for interpreting and translating external stimuli that reach other cells. Furthermore, it is linked to and controls all metabolic processes in the body.

neuronal activity

All of this dynamic is, in large part, possible because  the brain is made up of neurons.  These cells communicate with each other through electrical impulses, carrying and bringing perceived stimuli and interpreted information. This electrical phenomenon is called synapse.

When a problem affects neurons or other brain components, not only metabolism can be affected, but intellectual and/or emotional functions also deteriorate.

Epilepsy in dogs is one of the most frequent pathologies that our best friend can develop. Knowing the symptoms of epileptic seizures and knowing how to prevent them can improve your pet’s quality of life.

What is epilepsy in dogs?

Contrary to popular belief,  epilepsy in dogs is not a psychological or mental illness. Affected animals have no learning difficulties or personality disorders.

Idiopathic epilepsy is a physical disorder that can affect some neurons. Its main and only visible symptom are the so-called uncoordinated nerve transmissions.

Epileptic seizures may appear as a secondary symptom of other illnesses. This is the case of brain tumors, liver or heart failure, distemper, diabetes, trauma and/or intoxication. In these cases, it is an alarming symptom of the advance of serious diseases.

Causes and origin

The primary cause of the syndrome is unknown. It was found that the breeds with the greatest genetic tendency to suffer epilepsy are: German Shepherd, Saint Bernard, Beagle, Irish Setter and French Poodle (Poodle).

Advances in studies reveal that  epileptic seizures are due to an excess of electrical activity in some neurons. These cells are overactive and extreme arousal can affect brain function momentarily.

That is why,  during an epileptic seizure, the patient may have motor incoordination. In addition, there may also be involuntary and excessive movements, behavioral changes and/or temporary loss of consciousness.

What are the signs of epileptic seizures?

Experts divide the epileptic seizure into  3 stages :

1st stage: “Aura”

The initial symptoms that herald the epileptic crisis are presented: nervousness, restlessness, hyperactivity, excessive salivation, tremors and/or alienation.

This step may take a few seconds or last for days. Therefore, this is the crucial moment to stop the attack from advancing.

2nd stage: “Ictus”

It consists of the epileptic seizure episode itself and usually lasts a few seconds.

Usually, the dog suffers a loss of consciousness and falls on its side.  Then, it presents involuntary movements, such as pedaling, paddling or kicking. You can also lose control of your urinary and anal tracts, peeing and pooping unintentionally.

In case it is not possible to stop the attack, it  is essential to act correctly during the episode to prevent the dog from hurting himself.

3rd stage: “Post Ictus”

It is the next stage of  the epileptic episode.

The dog is often exhausted and disoriented. It may take a few moments to regain awareness of your environment and to trust external stimuli again. In some cases, there is a picture of blindness and temporary paralysis.

How to treat epilepsy in dogs and prevent seizures?

The treatment of epilepsy in dogs is to alleviate the symptoms, as the primary cause is still unknown. Anticonvulsant medications are usually given.

It is worth remembering that  the veterinarian is the only professional capable of recommending an appropriate treatment for each animal. Therefore, when recognizing the first signs of an epileptic attack, a visit to the veterinarian is essential.

How to act when facing an epileptic seizure in your pet?

  1. Keep calm  and act rationally.
  2. Place the animal on a flat and stable surface, preventing it from hurting itself by falling or hitting itself. You can place the animal on mats or clean pillows to make it more comfortable.
  3. Never try to pull your tongue or put your hand inside your dog’s mouth. The animal may bite its own tongue or unconsciously hurt you.
  4. Allow the dog to recover in time when the attack ends. It is necessary to provide a peaceful environment and not smother the dog with desperate attitudes.
  5. If the veterinarian has recommended any treatment to prevent  seizures ,  proceed as indicated.
