These breeds, although they are encompassed as hunting dogs, have a very balanced character; their function is to retrieve the prey with their mouth without hurting it, as they have a light and soft bite.

Perhaps by the name of “gathering dogs” you don’t know what you mean. But if we say ‘retriever’, maybe you know what we’re referring to. In this article we will talk about these breeds that are currently the most chosen as pets.

Who are the collecting dogs?

The  retrievers  were created in order to recover the prey for the hunter; without causing damage to it. For this reason; the mouth of the collecting dogs is “soft and smooth” as it allows them to catch the bird or animal and catch it without hurting it.

Even though they are  hunting dogs, gathering dogs are widely chosen as pets due to their affable, obedient and affectionate nature. They are said to be the “best dogs in the world” and they love children. Furthermore, they are used as assistants for sick or rehabilitating people; due to the patience and kindness of these dogs.

Collector dogs or  retrievers  are within group 8 of the “International Canine Federation” and include the following breeds:

1. labrador retriever

Originally from Newfoundland, Canada, the  Labrador retriever – the   photo that opens this article – is currently one of the most popular dog breeds. The main characteristics of your personality are: kindness, energy, intelligence and affability. It is considered an excellent company for people.

The Labrador is very curious, likes to explore, follow new tracks and, if bored; will not hesitate to flee. The color of the mantle is uniform and can be black, sand or chocolate.

1. Golden retriever

This breed of retrievers is native to Scotland; was developed in 1850. It is a very skilled breed in terms of tracking. Its friendly character; in addition to its golden fur; made him one of the most popular dogs in the world.

The  golden retriever  makes an excellent pet; but because he is so kind, he cannot be a watchdog with all the letters. He is docile, affectionate and very intelligent (he is fourth among all dog breeds in the world). He may be overweight; due to their voracity at mealtimes.

1. curly haired retriever

Originally from England, this dog is unusual outside of Great Britain. It is characterized by its curly fur, as the name suggests, brown or black. He is muscular, active and with a tail and long legs.

The  curly-haired retriever  is still used for hunting birds; both on land and in water; but especially as a pet in fields and farms. It is a happy, fun and very intelligent race; but a little complicated at the time of training.

This is another of the collecting dogs developed in the UK; to work in water or land. It is medium in size, weighing around 30 kilos, with a dense, smooth coat. It can be yellow, black or brown.

The smooth fur collector is very active, a perfect companion for children, confident, docile, affectionate and obedient; if you have a proper socialization since puppy. He learns quickly, loves to play and maintains his childlike attitude into old age.

1. Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever

Medium sized and bred to retrieve prey, it is often confused with the Golden Retriever; although it is of shorter height. It is believed to have emerged in the 19th century after the cross between a spaniel and a setter; and then the breed was improved with a  collie  and a retriever.

Tolls, as they are popularly known, are athletic, muscular and their double-layered coat is waterproof. As for your temperament; he is  intelligent, affectionate, patient and playful.

1. Chesapeake Bay Retriever

The last of the collection dog breeds was bred in the United States; to retrieve ducks and other waterfowl. Medium to large with curly brown fur in different shades, the Chesapeake bay retriever is similar in physiognomy to the Labrador.
