Meet the dogs of European royalty

The dog is man’s best friend, regardless of occupation or social status. So, in this article, we’re going to tell you a little bit about  European royalty dogs. They are really famous dogs that usually attract the attention of journalists.

European royalty dogs of yesterday and today

Since dogs became human pets, kings and queens across the European continent have chosen their best friends. From King Charles II, with his ‘Cavaliers’, to Prince Albert, with his English greyhound Eos, through Edward VI with his fox terrier, Cesar, to Queen Alexandra and her Japanese spaniel. These are the dogs of European royalty these days:

1. Black Labrador (Netherlands)

King William Alexander, the highest head of the nobility of the Netherlands, and the three princesses of Orange – Amalia, Alejandra and Ariadna – have two valuable black Labradors, named Skipper and Nala. These dogs accompany them everywhere. Even on your vacations and photo shoots on the beach.

2. Corgis (England)

Queen Elizabeth II of England has had no more, no less than about 30 dogs of this breed over her lifetime. In fact, she considers them part of her royal family. Since the 1950s, the Corgi (Welsh Corgi Pembroke) has become the quintessential “dog” of the English monarchy. He even got  a breeding program to continue the species.  She currently has two corgis named Holly and Willow.

3. Dachshund (Monaco)

Princess Carolina had many pets in her life. From a Yorkshire Terrier to a German Shepherd named Atmo, through a Labrador named Funny Face, and a Boxer, whom she named Hagler. She currently lives with two dogs of the breed known as ‘sausage’ (or Dachshund) everywhere (from the snow to the beach).

4. Labrador Retriever (Sweden)

Another of the dogs of European royalty is Jambo. He is the beloved mascot of Princess Victoria since the heir to the throne was a girl. The dog appears in many official portraits and royal celebrations.

5. Cocker Spaniel (England)

Apparently, Elizabeth II’s love of pets was inherited by Prince William. Since his wife Catherine was pregnant with the couple’s first child, George, they  have Lupo, a beautiful black cocker spaniel who has been seen in many photographs with the family. The arrival of the pet (a gift from Kate’s parents) created a problem at Court. The Queen does not allow them to take them to the Sandringham Residence (where they celebrate Christmas), as this upsets the beloved Corgis of the matriarch of the Royal family.

6. Techel (Denmark)

Queen Margaret and her husband Prince Henry of Laborde are always accompanied by teckel dogs. They’re not the only ones in the Danish royal house who love dogs. Crown Prince Frederick recently suffered the death of his faithful friend Ziggy. The dog was a border collie, which had been given to the prince as a gift when he got married 12 years ago. In several images, he appeared with the couple’s children (Christian, Isabella, Josephine and Vincent).

7. Lhasa Apso (Spain)

Queen Sofia is an open lover of animals, more precisely of this breed. Therefore, they could not fail to be part of this selection of dogs of European royalty. They also have a St. Bernard named Beethoven, and a crossbred dog they adopted from a shelter, Paquita.

For his part,  King Felipe VI also loves dogs and therefore has a schnauzer mascot, called Pushkin,  with whom he plays along with his daughters Leonor and Sofia. And that’s not all, as Elena de Bourbon, sister of the King, owns a cute fox terrier that she gave to her children Felipe and Victoria Federica.

8. Jack Russell Terrier (Belgium)

Whenever Kings Alberto and Paola go out for a walk, they are seen in public accompanied by their faithful white and brown Jack Russell Terrier mascot called Pikki. The little dog has even been in many photo sessions at the royal palace of Laeken, in Brussels, with its owners.
