The 61-year-old woman defines herself as an “independent protector”. At her home in Piñeyro -a town in Avellaneda, south of Greater Buenos Aires – she shelters the dogs, takes care of them and feeds them, and then puts them up for adoption.

“They say I’m crazy, but for me it’s a beautiful madness”, says Silvia, who has dedicated herself to this loving task for 15 years. It all started with seven dogs. And the number was increasing over time.

Thus,  her house is now populated by adorable dogs of different breeds: “street, guide and sidewalk”, as she defines them .

How Silvia Chirino takes care of the dogs she collects from the streets

When a new dog comes into Silvia’s life, she is in charge of cleaning it and taking it to the vet, so he can check the animal’s health.

Therefore, the veterinarian deworms him, vaccinates and, if necessary, also castrates him.

She says that some of the dogs that she collects from the streets have serious injuries and that, for this reason, they must be treated urgently by a professional. Silvia gets emotional when she remembers that she could save the lives of many furry ones.

A day in the life of Silvia and her 50 stray dogs

Silvia Chirino gets up very early every day to start cleaning her house with water and chlorine. Soon, it’s time to go out for a walk with the dogs that want to go out and take a walk, a feat that will be repeated in the afternoon.

When it’s time to eat, each animal receives the appropriate food according to its age and conditions.

Also, once a week, the retiree’s friends help her bathe all the dogs.

“It is a difficult task, but also a beautiful one”, explains Silvia. He also adds: “I love doing this and it fills me with satisfaction. Heal my soul. I believe that God puts everyone in the world to do something, and he put me to take care of these noble and unconditional beings”.

Silvia had several jobs throughout her life: she cleaned houses, worked in a warehouse and was also employed in the administrative sector. Now, that he has already obtained his deserved retirement, he confesses that he is only dedicated to his “loves”, the dogs.

And of course, despite the large number of dogs, she remembers everyone’s name. Many have been named after public figures or characters they like. For example:

  • Chiqui, a weak and thin dog, was named after the actress and television presenter Mirtha Legrand, who is also known by that nickname.
  • Marley, pseudonym of TV animator Alejandro Wiebe.
  • Jagger, as the Rolling Stones member.
  • Fiona, same name as the bride of the ogre Shrek.
  • Sherazade and Mihriban, as the characters in the telenovela “The Thousand and One Nights”.

The option to adopt

Silvia Chirino recommends to those who wish to have a dog, not to buy purebred animals and to decide for adoption. “You will save a life and your pet will know how to reward you,” he says.

To help the dogs she rescues find a new home, she created a website herself : www.amoresenadopcion.blogspot.com.ar

On the page, she uploads photos of all the dogs that live in her house and tells their stories, so that potential adopters can already know a little more about the dogs.
